Was Garbage ever really that good to begin with?

I ask only because they're putting out a new album this year (their first since 2005) and I'm wondering if anyone even cares anymore. I personally feel like a lot of their old stuff has a pretty dated, slick mid-'90s post-grunge kinda feel to it.

Here's the article about their new album: http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/the-beat-goes-on/posts/garbage-launches-own-label-for-new-set

I am THRILLED about the new album. Maybe it's because I follow both Shirley Manson's and the band's pages on Facebook, so I'm more in touch with other fans, but there is definitely excitement about this. They probably will never be as big as they were 15 years ago, granted, but I think there will be at least some minor hoopla--I've already seen a few articles in Rolling Stone and the like making note of it. I've seen them live 4 or 5 times, and agree with Planetix, Shirley has a fantastic stage presence (I've had a giant girl-crush on her since the first time I saw them waaaaay back in *checks date* 1995...holy cow).

Hmmm...not a huge fan. It's decent, but I probably won't be listening to it again or buying the album. Crazy how Shirley's voice has changed in the last 15 years... Anyway, thanks for the heads up!

How about the Beatles? Man, do they sound dated with all that monophonic sound and no distortion or sustain on the guitars and simplistic "love me do" lyrics. Does anyone care about them anymore?

This is ridiculous. Shirley Manson's not sleeping with me either, but somehow I'm not channeling that rejection into bashing her band. Listening to Garbage doesn't mean your Pavement/Flaming Lips/Wilco/Whatever Hipster Music That Enjoys Little Mainstream Popularity/Sigur Ros records will erase themselves. This is just music snob hating. Yawn...

To whomever mentioned "Parade" - When I've got a jones for a Garbage tune, that's the one I call up.

Hey DefRef - no one was "bashing" Garbage, a word that implies vitriol. All I said was that I felt their old sound hadn't aged well. To me, the music of The Beatles is timeless in a way that I don't think applies to Garbage's stuff. That's just my opinion, of course. If you enjoy Garbage's music, great - but to claim I'm a "music snob" just because I don't much care for one band that sold a lot of albums is pretty silly (and fyi, I'm gay, so I couldn't care less about sleeping with Shirley Manson). I like lots of mainstream music.
