Series premiere talkback: 'The Affair'

What did everybody think of Dominic West and Ruth Wilson in Showtime's new drama?

I posted my review of Showtime's "The Affair" a few days ago (along with an interview with Sarah Treem). Now it's your turn. For those who tuned in tonight — or watched the pilot on YouTube or On Demand earlier — what did you think? Can you forgive Dominic West for cheating on Maura Tierney, or Ruth Wilson for cheating on Joshua Jackson? Did you find one perspective more interesting — or more "real" — than the other? Did you get tired of seeing some of the same scenes twice, or were the differences interesting enough? How did you feel about the prank Noah's son pulls, especially coming so soon before the incident at the restaurant with his daughter? If you're a "Wire" fan, did you laugh at John Doman again scolding Dominic West? And will you watch again?

Have at it.

Best and Worst of 'Dracula Untold': So bad it's good?

Best and Worst of 'Dracula Untold': So bad it's good?

At least Charles Dance got a paycheck, right?

Maybe the critics were wrong.

Maybe "Dracula Untold" is the entertaining fantasy action-adventure moviegoers have been waiting for since, um, "Guardians of the Galaxy" opened at the beginning of August. Maybe Luke Evans has a huge following know one really knew about.  Maybe America has just been waiting for Dracula to be a hero like those Vamps in "Twilight" and "True Blood."  Whatever it was, "Dracula Untold" almost won the weekend at the box office and somewhat over performed with $23 million at the box office.

Review: 'CITIZENFOUR' is a thrilling re-examination of Snowden's NSA leaks

There's no going deeper than the where Laura Poitras' drives her latest documentary.

Imagine sitting in on Deep Throat's first meeting with Woodward and Bernstein. Not like "All the President's Men," shrouded in Gordon Willis shadows or dramatized by William Goldman's cunning ear, but watching as a fly on the wall, witnessing men risk careers, futures and lives in the name of uncovering conspiracy.

'SNL' pays tribute to Jan Hooks with 'Love is But A Dream'

Check out Netflix’s 'Daredevil' in his black costume

“SNL” pays tribute to Jan Hooks
“Saturday Night Live” paid tribute to the late Hooks twice on Saturday: First in primetime, in a 1990 “Vintage SNL” episode hosted by Alec Baldwin. That was followed by a tribute by Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig during the live show, featuring a re-airing of the famous “Love is But a Dream” short film that co-starred the late Phil Hartman. Wiig called Hooks “one of the best there ever was and her influence is clear in everyone of us who’s been here since."

“SNL” confirms Jim Carrey as host with musical guest Iggy Azalea
Carrey, who returns to “SNL” on Oct. 25, previously hosted in 1996 and 2011.

“SNL” brings back Stefon to mock "MTV’s Dan Cortese" — Cortese responds
For the first time, Stefon appeared on Weekend Update without Seth Meyers, who was performing in Las Vegas. Stefon repeatedly name-dropped Cortese, who quickly responded on Twitter: "Yo @nbcsnl & #stefon I would've responded sooner but me & Winger are killin' it #Rocknjock style at Hooters in Cleveland! See u next week!" PLUS: "SNL" spoofs "Hollywood Game Night," and the puppet sketch's return was thanks to Howard Stern.

Interview: 'Mulaney' creator-star John Mulaney on his FOX comedy's learning curve

What does 'Mulaney' creator John Mulaney think of his leading man?

It can't be ignored that "Mulaney" premiered last Sunday night on FOX and the ratings weren't especially good.

I got on the phone with creator-star John Mulaney on Thursday and made a promise up-front: I'd lead with quick ratings discussion and then never return to the topic and we stuck to it.

The bottom line on that subject: FOX is 100 percent behind "Mulaney" and the network knows things will turn around. And what else would anyone say after one week?

Mostly, we discussed the learning process on "Mulaney," which was originally developed at NBC, moved over to FOX and which is already far deeper into production than most freshman shows.

This week, in fact, found "Mulaney" working on its 13th episode, while Mulaney was also, at least according to Twitter, parlaying with old chum Bill Hader in advance of Hader's "SNL" hosting stint, so it's impressive both that he found time to chat all, but also that he politely apologized because production lunch break was delayed by seven minutes, making him late to call.

Instead of talking about ratings or following in the NY Times footsteps to talk about reviews, Mulaney and I discussed the transition from stand-up to sitcom structuring, the need to sometimes adjust his material to network commercial considerations and, in an amusing moment, the strengths and weaknesses of Mulaney's leading man.

Recap: 'Saturday Night Live' – Bill Hader and Hozier

The former 'SNL' great returns to host for the first time

This season of “Saturday Night Live” has been surprisingly devoid of nostalgia, something I didn’t think would happen in this, the show’s fortieth season. But with former cast member Bill Hader returning tonight, look for that to change. And honestly? That’s fine. I have no problem with the show occasionally celebrating its own history, especially since much of the current cast was there during Hader’s tenure. Look for many of Hader’s classic characters to make a comeback tonight. Will there be a Stefon appearance? One could argue (and I would argue) that the Stefon sendoff was so perfect that any future appearance of the character would dilute that moment. But since Stefon did make another appearance during Seth Meyers’ farewell, anything’s possible.

Something that’s not possible but definite: I’ll be liveblogging everything that happens tonight. Also definite: Many of you will rend garments when I give something a “B” instead of a “B+”. I am just giving the people what they want: A reason to hate me. It’s how I roll, and how I’ve been rolling for five years here at HitFix.

Recap: 'Doctor Who' - The Mummy isn't the only ancient thing on the Orient Express

Remember the first rule: The Doctor lies.

After a heavy-handed unplanned pregnancy metaphor last week, Clara decided she’d had just about enough of traveling with the Doctor. It’s one thing to befriend a madman in a box, it’s quite another to clean up the messes of a cavalier madman with a tenuous grasp on the idea that other people have thoughts and emotions.

Robert Redford to receive Film Society of Lincoln Center's Charlie Chaplin Award

This might take a little of the sting off that 'All is Lost' snub

He may have missed that Oscar nomination in January for "Bob on a Boat" — aka, "All is Lost" — but Robert Redford will be collecting some more hardware this year after all. The Film Society of Lincoln Center has announced that the 77-year-old industry legend will be honored at the 42nd annual Chaplin Award Gala.
