Oscar producers: Neil Patrick Harris received the Academy's only formal offer to host
Responding to a Hollywood Reporter report that Harris was the 4th choice to host the Oscars, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron released a statement saying: “After every Oscar show there is always a discussion as to who will host the next one. Many names are discussed and sometimes even floated without there being any formal offers. At times, these casual discussions take on a life of their own, and some are eager to break a story without knowing the facts. Neil Patrick Harris received the Academy’s formal offer. He is the perfect choice for the Oscars and will be the consummate host.”

Gotham Awards nominations kick off the Oscar season with a huge 'Boyhood' boost

Four mentions is a great start for IFC's little engine

The Independent Filmmaker Project officially fired the starting gun on the film awards season as always this morning with the announcement of this year's Gotham Awards nominees. Unsurprisingly, the most high-profile indie in the race — "Boyhood" — drew the most nominations with a whopping four mentions, including Best Feature. That's extremely high for the Gotham Awards and it sends IFC's campaign sailing into the season with a huge burst of wind.

TV Ratings: World Series Game 2 leads FOX Wednesday, so-so 'The 100' return

'Black-ish' retains well, 'Stalker' is steady in the key demo

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, October 22, 2014.

The Kansas City Royals won Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday night, equalizing the Fall Classic, while FOX coasted to primetime victory in all measures.

Once again, it's worth noting that these are time-period ratings and with one of the World Series cities on the West Coast, they're extra-inexact and preliminary.

Among Wednesday positives, "Black-ish" was up slightly in viewers from last week and continued its steady retention behind "Modern Family." Also remaining steady was "Stalker," which has barely dropped from its premiere among young viewers, though the overall number is threatening to fall below 7 million.

And over on The CW, "Arrow" was up week-to-week, but the season premiere of "The 100" could only equal last week's "Flash" encore in that slot, which isn't all that bad, but also isn't all that great.

On to the numbers...

'Transformers' sound mixers reveal how they kept your ears from caving in

Greg P. Russell and Scott Millan have 25 Best Sound Mixing nominations between them

Greg. P Russell and Scott Millan are masters of an art that can be difficult to appreciate. Great sound mixers take essential tracks — dialogue, score, and effects, all crafted and fighting for ear space — and meld them together to match, or enhance, the visuals on screen. In a film like “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” the balancing act is like a Philippe Petit tightrope walk, one rogue robo-BRAAM tipping the controlled chaos soundscape into cacophony. In a new installment of Variety’s Artisans series, senior VP Tim Grey talks to Russell and Millan about the fourth “Transformers” and Michael Bay’s increasingly difficult audio challenge.

A Shuffle shakes things up for the remaining couples and singles

Pre-credit sequence. When we left off, Drew had just masterfully organized a conspiracy against himself and flawlessly executed his own elimination from the game. "Tribal was freakin' insane," says a perplexed Jon, vowing to do damage control. He goes to everybody and apologizes and says he'd have voted with them if they'd told him. The "You're either with me or against me" rant that the editors teased last week was actually Jon quoting Drew. Jeremy is pleased to be in the middle.

Hulk and Iron Man go head to head in apocalyptic 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron' trailer

Hulk and Iron Man go head to head in apocalyptic 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron' trailer

The Scarlet Witch and her powers play a big role in this first peek at next summer's mega-sequel

My first impression of the new "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" trailer is that Joss Whedon appears to have taken some of the criticisms of his shooting style on the first film to heart. Even as the film became one of the biggest hits of all time, I read plenty of comments about how Whedon's eye still seemed more suited to the small screen than to movie theaters.

That does not appear to be a problem on "Age Of Ultron."

"I'm going to show you something beautiful…"
